Hello gals!! I wanted to throw a topic out there.
How do you feel about nanny cams? Would you work for a family who used one?
My opinion and our agency's stand on a nanny cam is as follows:
I feel that it is appropriate to use survielance if a client discloses that the nanny will be video recorded and will sign and agreement that no surveilance will take place in an area where the nanny would have the right to privacy (the bathroom and her own private living quarters-if live-in).
I do not feel that a video camera should be used as a replacement for good parenting. If a camera is installed because a family felt that they didn't trust their nanny, then the nanny should be let go. If a parent suspects for one minute that their children are in harms way, don't wait for "proof", politely discharge the nanny with severance immediately.
I worked for a family who used nanny cams and we worked together. If there were any instances where a situation was questionable, my employers would sit and watch with me during my evaluation and we'd discuss the situation. We mostly laughed at me dancing and karaokeing with the utensils when I'd empty the dishwasher.
Nannies should work everyday as if they are being recorded. You should ask yourself, if my employers walked in right now, would they be shocked by what they saw. Work hard, work smart, and strive to be the BEST nanny. (It was my personal goal to be the nanny that everyone wanted to hire)
I look forward to reading your responses.
